UCSB Ranked Eleventh In First Poll For 2014

Baltimore, MD - The first U.S. Lacrosse WCLA poll was released today and it puts the young UCSB women's lacrosse squad ranked 11th in the nation. The Gauchos are 3-3 overall after going 1-3 in their last four games with the #1, #5, #10 and #12 teams in the country. It was a brutal stretch but the Gauchos played top ranked Pittsburgh close for a lot of the game before falling 10-14.

Then came 5th ranked Georgia and a 7-10 setback after a tied 4-4 score at halftime. Shortly after, UCSB played defending national champion and currently ranked 10th Colorado State but came up just short at 10-11. At the end of the gauntlet was 12th ranked University of Texas and the Gauchos took that one 11-8.

"No excuses for going 1-3 and no bemoaning how we could have easily been 2-2 in that stretch," says UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey. 

"It's time to start playing Gaucho lacrosse and that's our primary goal right now."

Strength of schedule for UCSB is at an all-time high. Four of the six opponents played so far are ranked. Seven of the eight regular season games remaining on the UCSB schedule are with teams ranked in the national Top 25. It makes for a whopping 11 of 14 match-ups, or 78.6% of the regular season, pitting Gauchos versus ranked teams.

WWLL Central Conference play starts this week when UCSB travels to 6th ranked Cal Poly SLO for a 7:00pm game on Friday. The Mustangs are 4-2 overall and 16-5 winners over Texas and 18-15 winners over Colorado State, the two common opponents this season. UCSB looks to play well on the road for the second time this year. The Gauchos are 2-0 in away games.
