Colorado State Nips UCSBFeb. 15, 2014 Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB led 8-7 at halftime but defending national champion Colorado State University came back and won by a goal in the third game of the Santa Barbara Shootout for UCSB. The Rams, pre-season number one and playing their second game of the Shootout, prevailed 11-10. The Gauchos had their chances to tie it at the end. Four straight shooting opportunities in the final moments were turned away by Colorado State goalie Kenzie Baer. The final 7 minutes of the game were scoreless with UCSB on offense most of those 7 minutes but not converting. Seniors Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) and Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) led UCSB with four goals apiece. Junior Lindsay Alex (Tustin, CA) had four assists. Draw Controls were 13-10 in favor of UCSB and freshman Maddy Montague (Aliso, CA) picked up 4 for UCSB as did Evans. Shots were pretty close in the game with CSU having a slight edge 22-20. The Rams improved to 1-1 with a 7:00pm game coming up against Cal Poly SLO. The Gauchos, bitten by injuries to returning starters the last few weeks, dropped to 2-3 with three losses to Top Ten teams. UCSB finishes Shootout play on Sunday at 1:00pm when they play pre-season 6th ranked University of Texas.
