UCSB Hooks Texas 11-8Feb. 16, 2014 Santa Barbara, CA - The Gauchos and University of Texas faced each other in the final game of the Santa Barbara Shootout for both teams. UCSB jumped out to a 5-0 lead and won 11-8 against the pre-season 6th ranked Longhorns. After five minutes of scoreless play three different UCSB players scored in a five goal run that put the Gauchos up by five 10 minutes into the contest. Texas then fought back and outscored UCSB 3-2 over the next 20 minutes for the Gauchos to lead 7-3 at halftime. Mostly even play in the first 20 minutes of the second half saw UCSB outscoring Texas 3-2. An unassisted goal by senior Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) was the result of a successful UCSB ride on the Longhorns clear. Hubbert came out of seeminlgy nowhere to win a ground ball and sprinted 35 yards to put one past the Texas goalie with 11 minutes remaining. UCSB was up 10-5. The Longhorns rallied and scored three unanswered goals to make it too interesting before sophomore Kelsey Trepa (San Marcos, CA) scored unassisted or UCSB for the 11-8 final. Senior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) and sophomore Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA) scored four goals apiece for UCSB and Evans added an assist. Senior Megan Hughes (Tustin, CA) had 8 saves. UCSB improved to 3-3 while Texas dropped to 2-3. The Gauchos have a weekend off before traveling to league rival Cal Poly SLO for a Friday night game at 7pm Febraury 28th. Texas hosts state rival Texas A&M on February 22nd.
