SBCC Stymies San Jose In Season OpenerFeb. 3, 2023 Carpinteria, CA - The Vaqueros opened the season at the Santa Barbara Shootout at the Santa Barbara Polo Club with a 20-0 win over the club from San Jose State. The league game featured WWLL Central D2 SBCC versus the North D2 Spartans. The Vaqueros led wire to wire, taking a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and all 18 athletes on the roster played early and often. SBCC freshman Kiara Kofoed (Orinda, CA) won the first draw on her way to a game high six draw controls at the center. That first possession resulted in freshman Maya Sordoillet (Mill Valley, CA) finding sophomore Paris Lisi (Walnut Creek, CA) open for an assisted goal. The first four goals for SBCC were assisted and then with 5:50 remaining in the fifteen minute quarter sophomore Marianna Gamet (Redondo, CA) scored her first collegiate goal unassisted. The Vaqueros led 12-0 at halftime and then stepped on the brakes to close out the game with an 8-0 second half. "The team went up tempo right away and that showed with our fast start and the 6-0 run in the first quarter," said first year head coach Paul Ramsey. "Then when we slowed it down to not run up the score we kept pretty good ball control choosing our moments, which showed some maturity." "I was happy with that sportsmanship and pleased to see their skill level work for them both fast and slow," added Ramsey, who also coaches the team at San Marcos High School. Ramsey seems to be following in water polo coach Chuckie Roth's footsteps with the double duty at the same two schools. SBCC sophomore goalie Tatum Davis (Redondo, CA) got the shutout with a two save performance against the overmatched Spartans. The Vaqueors are 1-0 and play Portland University on Saturday at 10:00am at the Santa Barbara Polo Club. San Jose drops to 0-1 and plays UC Irvine on Saturday at the polo club.
