Eight SBCC Womens Lacrosse Players Find Four Year Schools - Aug 12, 2023

Santa Barbara, CA - Following the Spring 2023 season seven Vaqueros successfully transfered to four year schools and another lacrosse alumnae is off on her career path already after three years at SBCC in the Cosmetology Program. The Unviersity of California system proved the most ppopular. UCSB benefits the most with five new Gauchos, UC Davis gets one to be an Aggie and one will become a Triton at UCSD.

With SBCC about to start classes on August 28th and the college still accepting admission applications it's a great illustration for prospective students to see what they can do at SBCC, where they can go afterward and what they can do afterward too.

"I'm extremely proud of our eight graduates who came here, got their work done and successfully applied and are moving on," says interim head coach Paul Ramsey.  "It's the nature of a two-year school program to miss them sooner and more often than perhaps a coach at a four-year school so it's new territory for me."

Broncos Sprint Out To Early Lead And Win Game With Vaqueros - May 12, 2023

  SBCC WLAX At Nationals

Virginia Beach, VA - Boise State University used their quickness to sprint out to a 4-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game and then used that quick start to keep their distance and increase their lead in a 19-11 win over SBCC. It was the fourth game of the event for both teams at the WCLA National Championship Tournament. Each squad had battled their way to this matchup after losing their first game in pool play but then winning two straight games to get to the fifth place game.

It was not the start the Vaqueros wanted but they regrouped after a timeout and then held the Broncos scoreless for more than ten minutes. Sophomore goalie Tatum Davis had 15 saves behind the re-energized SBCC defense but the Broncos with all their possessions all game outshot the Vaqueros 34-24. SBCC scored two goals during that span and were playing much better defense but faced trouble clearing the ball all the way through the midfield and ended back on defense way too much in the game.

"It wasn't truly a drop back zone ride they were running but they were getting two and three attackers on the ball right after our first clearing pass," said coach Paul Ramsey.  "Eventually we started re-directing and switching fields but they earned too many possessions early and used them."

After solving the full field clearing game SBCC played the Broncos to a 7-7 second half. While the Vaqueros solved the transition game for the second half it was wave after wave of Boise State players coming in fresh in an attack and midfielder rotation that stymied a Vaqueros comeback. The Broncos ran lines for both attack and midfield. They switched in four new attackers regularly to have fresh legs for their ride. Then in the next few minutes three fresh midfielders came sprinting in for running the full length of the field.

"Even with their subbing strategy and their high work rate I don't think it's as daunting a game for us with our skill level if we're not in the 0-4 hole so early, added Ramsey. "We started playing at game speed after we called that early timeout but it was too late."

Using a balanced share the ball offense even in the face of feeling they needed to hurry up and score to catch up the Vaqueros had seven players get goals and assists as SBCC were 7 of 11 goals assisted.

SBCC Stuns Air Force In Consolation Semifinal At WCLA Tournament - May 11, 2023

Virginia Beach, VA - SBCC were up 4-1 at the end of the first quarter in their WCLA Tournament consolation semifinal with the club from Air Force for the right to go play in the fifth place game. The Vaqueros won 19-6 to advance. The score at halftime was 13-3 in favor of SBCC and part of that half was a 9-2 second quarter by the Vaqueros that provided good separation from Air Force.

Six different Vaqueros were in the scoring column in this one. Sophomore Sabrina Forbes (Santa Clarita, CA) led all scorers with 5 goals and 1 assist as SBCC outshot the Falcons 26 to 12. Freshman Kiara Kofoed (Orinda, CA) had 7 draw controls and the Vaqueros won 19 of the 28 draw controls in the game. Sophomore goalie Tatum Davis (Redondo, CA) had 6 saves against 12 shots for 50%.

"It's a really nice position to be in for us," said coach Paul Ramsey after the game. "We came in as the 8th seed and we're having fun now as we take solid aim at finishing better than that in this fifth place game."

The Vaqueros improved to 12-2 overall and advance to play Boise State. The Broncos beat Cal State San Marcos 12-8 in their consolation bracket semifinal. The fifth place game is 11:00am EST on Field 2 at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex in Virginia Beach.

SBCC Wins 21-1 Over Pacific Lutheran - May 11, 2023

Virginia Beach, VA - SBCC faced 12th seed Pacific Lutheran in the final pool play game for both teams at the WCLA National Championship Tournament and won 21-1 to advance to a consolation bracket semifinal matchup with 9th seeded Air Force in the afternoon today.  The Vaqueros were in rebound mode after a tough loss to the #1 seeded Utah Valley University team yesterday in a #1 vs #8 matchup in the first round of the twelve team WCLA Tournament.

"We're looking forward to the matchup with Air Force this afternoon," said coach Paul Ramsey.  "They upset fourth seeded Providence 13-12 in pool play so we will need to come out to play well from the first whistle."

SBCC scored early and often taking a 11-1 halftime lead over Pacific Lutheran. Nine different Vaqueros scored goals in the run-away and the Lutes scored their only goal in the first quarter. SBCC improved to 11-2 and with the win advances to play Air Force for the right to play in the 5th place game.

SBCC Falls To Top Ranked Utah Valley At WCLA Nationals - May 10, 2023

Virginia Beach, VA - The Vaqueros had a 3-3 second quarter and pulled to within one goal partway through that quarter but first ranked and top seeded Utah Valley University led 8-5 at halftime. SBCC freshman Kiara Kofoed (Orinda, CA) scored with 1:20 left in the first half to get the Vaqueros within three goals and SBCC had another shot on goal in the final ten seconds of the first half. Kofoed led SBCC in scoring with 4 goals and an assist.  The #1 ranked Wolverines wore down the Vaqueros during the second half and went on to win 16-7 but it wasn't until most of the third quarter was counted down when Utah Valley got their 8th goal and that proved to the winning goal with 5:40 remaining in the period.

The matchup was the first pool play game for both teams at the WCLA National Championship tournament at the Princess Anne Athletic Complex in Virginia Beach. SBCC, seeded 8th in the twelve team WCLA Tournament, were given a matchup with the #1 seed in their pool play opener but battled the entire way. Sophomore Sabrina Forbes (Santa Clarita, CA) scored unassisted with 11:10 remaining in the second quarter to get the Vaqueros to 4-5, forcing the Wolverines to call a time out.

"Trailing only a goal and competing like we did in the midfield to put Sabrina in position to score we had some momentum going into their timeout," said coach Paul Ramsey. "Coming out of it they tightened up their defense and it became increasingly more difficult for us to find the open player."

Facing the SBCC shooting was First Team All-American goalie Beverly Jones for Utah Valley who was also named WCLA Goalie Of The Year in the USA Lacrosse All-American Awards Ceremony on Tuesday night. Jones, considered the top goalie in all the land, also benifitted from a defense that always had two defenders on the ball. SBCC offense had very little time to move Jones when they were shooting. On the other end of the field the Vaqueros were dealing with WCLA Amtahcha Player Of The Year Maya Lightfoot and WCLA Attacker Of The Year Rebekah Sheperd.

"The deck was certainly stacked for them and it was tough for us to be seeded 8th out of twelve and play #1 right out the gate but enough about them," said Ramsey. "For our first year together roster and for this team to compete like we did at this level and keep improving together through the game was really nice to see."

SBCC Bounces Back With 16-4 Win Over Cal State Fullerton - Apr 16, 2023

San Diego, CA - The Vaqueros outscored the Titans 16-4 in the WWLL State Tournament third place game to bounce back from their disappointing semifinal loss on Saturday.  A 7-0 first quarter was the real SBCC team in this one. Saturday in the 12-9 loss to UC Santa Cruz the Vaqueros were frustrated during shooting.  Not so in this game as they were 7 of 9 in the first 15 minutes of the contest.

Sophomore Sabrina Forbes (Santa Clarita, CA) led all scorers with 3 goals and 2 assists. Close behind her were freshman Kiara Kofoed (Orinda, CA) with four goals and sophomore Marianna Gammet (Redondo, CA) with 3 goals and 1 assist. Eight SBCC players contributed goals and assists to the offense.  Sophomore goalie Tatum Davis (Redondo, CA) had six saves.

SBCC is now 10-1 overall and waiting for word about an at-large bid to the WCLA National Championship Tournament in Virginia Beach May 9th - 12th.  Sixteen teams are selected for the tournament.  Half the field will be made up of conference automatic qualifer (AQ) teams and the other half will come from the next best eight teams in the WCLA.  The Vaqueros were ranked 8th in the April 10th WCLA poll when they were 9-0 before the WWLL Tournament. The committee will have to weigh overall body of work with their two most recent results.
