--Title IX of the Education Amendment, 1972

UCSB professors, students, administrators and staff will kick off celebrating 40 years of Title IX by discussing the impact the landmark legislation has had on their lives and careers. Light refreshments will be served and those attending may listen to personal stories, followed by a moderated discussion of Title IX’s impact on issues of gender equity in athletics, academics, and campus life. A panel of experts will grapple with the question, “It’s been 40 years since Title IX was enacted—what has changed for the better and what do we still struggle to achieve?”

Thank You Title IXMeanwhile, the women's lacrosse team at USCB will be celebrating Title IX all year long by providing opportunities to play the great game of lacrosse. The growth of lacrosse on campus has been such that this year the UCSB women's lacrosse club has added a third team. This component of the program will compete as a Novice Team. The program now carries three teams of UCSB students for a head count of about 60 athletes and, additionally, administrates the SBCC women's lacrosse club with another 15 athletes.

Multiple opportunities to compete at the club level abound in the sport of women's lacrosse at UCSB. Most immediate is the 5th Annual Santa Barbara Fall Brawl with 32 teams. No fisticuffs, don't worry, just a catchy event name. Later in the regular season UCSB hosts the 25th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout in February with 64 teams. At the end of the season UCSB is hosting their 16 team conference championship tournament in April. All these girls and womens teams coming to UCSB to play lacrosse add up to more than 2,000 girls and women enjoying the chance to compete in their sport while they're on campus at UC Santa Barbara.

UCSB has the really high interest in playing women's lacrosse at the University because of opportunities Title IX created at the youth and high school level for girls over the last 40 years. Students who are part of the different UCSB women's lacrosse teams will attend many of the campus Title IX celebration events. The players would also aim at a big presence at the October 25th, 12 Noon to 2:00pm, Students Thank Title IX event at the Student Resource Building (SRB) patio except, guess what, a number of the players in the program will be on their way to the Hawaii Lacrosse Tournament to celebrate their opportunities by playing lacrosse.
