UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The UCSB women's lacrosse club is offering beginner lessons to the entire campus to kick off their Fall Ball season. Never played? Come around to the UCSB Recreation Center Sports Complex and walk out onto the turf until you see lacrosse.

    ·Thursday, September 26th, 2 to 4pm, RecCen Field #4

    ·Friday, September 27th, 2 to 4pm, RecCen Field #4

Extra sticks are available and it will be a fine opportunity for anyone who has never played to try it and see if they like it. No commitment to join the team is required. UCSB students may come just for the fun of it. Additional information is on the Events Calendar here on this website, including a campus map showing the location of the turf fields.

"We aim at having six to twelve beginners join us every year," says B Team Head Coach Anna Rogers. "It's an integral part of what we do here to grow the sport."

More than that, the two-time defending WWLL Division 2 champion UCSB B Team had nine players last year that picked up the game for the first time at UCSB, either in 2012 or 2013. Novices have contributed to the B Team's two championships. An additional two players moved up to the A Team for and during the 2013 season. One who started playing for the first time at UCSB, in 2012, was on the UCSB A Team roster all of 2013 ... and started in the last 19 games of a 24 game season, all the way through a national championship game appearance by the Gauchos. Another moved up to the A Team for the post-season.

UCSB A Team head coach Paul Ramsey believes beginners fresh to the sport and eager to achieve are part of what makes the Gauchos go.

"We would not have a competitive B Team without our aggressive approach toward getting beginners to come out for lacrosse here," said Ramsey.  "We actively recruit them from the moment they are accepted to UCSB."

Full squad Fall Ball training begins on Monday, September 30th, and beginner practices continue for all UCSB students who decide they like it enough to join the program. For field space and staffing reasons beginner practices are MTTh, 2 to 4pm, for six weeks of Fall Quarter. Experienced players will train MWF, 2 to 4pm, for six weeks.
