Vaqueros Drop Close Contest At UCSBNov. 5, 2022 Santa Barbara, CA - SBCC Women's Lacrosse made the short trip up Highway 101 to participate in the Tenth Annual Faceoff vs Leukemia Challenge at UCSB. The event is held in memory of Stephan Meloy, a former Gaucho lacrosse player who passed away in 2011 after battling Leukemia. Donations are still being accepted. It was a nail biter. The Vaqueros played their first and only fall ball scrimmage narrowly dropping the contest 6-7 to the Gauchos. The score was 4-3 in favor of UCSB at halftime. In the unofficial friendly it were SBCC sophomore goalie Tatum Davis standing out with nine saves. UCSB was also hosting their Family Weekend and Vaquero parents made it their own family weekend coming to watch as well. Spirited camraderie is a good description for the day with about half the SBCC team hoping to transfer and play at UCSB. A lot of the players already know each other. SBCC started out winning the first draw and were in a position to shoot early but the UCSB defense took away the ball on a nice stick check from behind the shooter. It was good defense most of the game and looks at the goal were hard to come by for both teams. The Gauchos scored the first goal but there was never much momentum for either team the entire game. The result was the nailbiter that fans at the event enjoyed down to the wire. The Vaqueros end their fall ball with a few light training sessions before starting pre-season preparations for their January 28th regular season opener with Moorpark College.
