UCSB 2-0 In San DiegoMar. 3, 2013 San Diego, CA - The Gauchos picked up the second win of their San Diego tour with a 19-12 win over the club from San Diego State University. UCSB led 11-7 at halftime thanks to two fastbreak goals in the final 21 seconds of the half. The Aztecs had just scored with 56 seconds remaining in the half to pull within two but two draw controls and two quick looks put UCSB up by 4 at halftime. Couple those two goals with the two the Gauchos scored to open the second half and it was a four goal run for UCSB. The rest of the way in the second half UCSB outscored San Diego State 6-5 to get the seven goal win. The aggressive looks at goal at a time when some teams shut down and only want to take care of the ball, like the end and beginning of a half broke it open for the Gauchos. "The best time to score a goal is often right after a goal is scored," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey. "Recognizing if the other team has relaxed a little bit and being aggressive enough about what we're doing out there to take advantage of it can make the difference." UCSB feeding and cutting continued to show improvement and 11 of 15 goals from the field were assisted. The Gauchos also scored on 4 free position shots. Sophomore Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA) had her second 6 assist game with 1 goal and 6 assists. Her targets were wide spread with three different players on the end of her feeds. The seven points led all point scorers. Senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) drew a lot of attention from the Aztecs defense but finished with 6 goals despite playing only about 45 minutes of the game. Eight UCSB players got in on the scoring and the Gauchos outshot San Diego State 36-19. "We're still finding the balance on offense for feeding & cutting and being agressive enough to get ourselves to the cage but we had a ton of opportunities out there today," added Ramsey. The Gauchos improved to 8-3 overall and next face 7th ranked University of Colorado, Boulder in a Friday night game of the inaugual Santa Barbara International Friendship Games. Meiji University and Nihon University of Tokyo are the feature teams. San Diego State dropped to 3-3 overall and next plays at 11th ranked USC on Saturday.
