UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The fifth ranked club from University of Michigan upset UCSB 11-10 with a come from behind win in the last game of the 25th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout for both teams. The Gauchos led 8-5 at halftime and seemed to have solved their slow start problems. Unfortunately the strong second half didn't follow and after freshman Claudia Hammerschmidt (Armonk, NY) scored unassisted to put the Gauchos up 10-6 with a little more than 20 minutes remaining that was it for the UCSB offense.

The Wolverines started a rally on a goal with 16:23 remaining in the game. That score pulled Michigan to within three at 10-7 in favor of UCSB. Slowly over the next 14 minutes everything went the way of the Wolverines and it all culminated in the winning goal with 2:15 left. UCSB outshot Michigan 23-21 throughout the game and had multiple offensive possessions over the final two minutes but took no quality shots during that time.

"We were making some mistakes at the end of that game that leads me to believe we ran out of gas," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey.

"There was nothing left in the tank...it wasn't us."

Freshman Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) started in goal and had 4 saves. Senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) played the second half and had 5 saves. Senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led UCSB in scoring with 5 goals and Michigan Katie Mezwa (Rochester Hills, MI) led the Wolverines with 5 goals and 1 assist.

UCSB has finished a tough stretch of four games against Top 10 opponents 1-3 and next plays at UCLA on Saturday in a 1:00pm game. Michigan improved to 3-1 and also plays next on Saturday when they host Miami of Ohio.
