UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - UCSB was edged out by Colorado State in the second game of the Santa Barbara Shootout for both teams. The up-tempo Rams, top ranked in all the land, led 6-2 at halftime but the Gauchos rallied to pull within two goals with about 19 minutes left. Colorado State responded and scored two more on free position shots to lengthen their lead to four goals at 9-5. UCSB rallied again and senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) scored two straight goals to get the Gauchos to within two with just under 5 minutes. UCSB had two more shots in that final five minutes but were turned away and when the Rams got the ball they held onto it for most of the rest of the game.

Both teams shot evenly with the Rams holding a slight edge at 14-13 but it was draw controls that made the game for Colorado State. There they bettered UCSB getting 12 of the 18 draws in the game. Both goalies played about even with senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) saving 5 in 60 minutes for UCSB and Colorado State goalie Natalie Dubas (Ft. Collins, CO) making 4 saves. Mitchell led UCSB in scoring with 5 goals. Ali Slyne (Holliston, MA) led Colorado State with 5 goals and 1 assist. UCSB senior Alyssa Flores (Martinez, CA) drew mark-up duties on pre-season WCLA Division One player of the year Haley Bernstein (Colorado Springs, CO) and helped the Gauchos hold her to two goals.

UCSB dropped to 4-1 with the loss but looks to rebound quickly tonight in a 6:00pm game with the 3rd ranked club from University of Florida (1-1) at the RecCen Sports Complex Stadium. Colorado State next plays Arizona at 3:00pm today. The 25th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout continues through 3:00pm games on Sunday.
