Gauchos Get 3rd Seed at WWLL Championships

WWLL ChampionshipsLos Angeles, CA - Both UCSB teams were given the 3rd seed for the upcoming WWLL Championships at UCLA April 17-18. The UCSB 'A' Team is seeded behind top seed Santa Clara and 2nd seed Cal Poly SLO, the only two teams to beat them this season. The Gauchos are 11-2 overall, 3-1 in WWLL Central games and ranked 5th nationally. UCSB will open with 16th ranked Arizona State in a quarterfinal game at 12 Noon on Saturday. It is a rematch of the first round game played in the 2009 WWLL Championships. The Gauchos won that quarterfinal 10-9 and went on to win the tournament with a 12-11 overtime win over UCLA in the semifinals and a 12-10 come from behind success over Santa Clara in the final. UCSB is going for their third straight WWLL Championship at this event. The Gauchos beat Cal Poly SLO 12-11 in a miraculous double overtime comeback in 2008.

The UCSB 'B' team is back in the WWLL D2 Championship hunt after narrowly missing qualifying in 2009. The Gauchos earned the automatic qualifier for WWLL South D2 this year with an 11-10 double overtime win over Chapman this past Saturday. The Gauchos are 5-4 overall and 4-0 in WWLL South D2. As the 3rd seed they will play 2nd seeded Cal Poly SLO 'B' in a 4pm semifinal on Saturday. The club from UC Berkeley and UCLA 'B' will play the first semifinal at 2pm. Games for 1st and 3rd place will be played on Sunday.

The UCSB 'A' team will depart Santa Barbara Friday afternoon and stay in family homes in the Pacific Palisades both Friday and Saturday night. The 'B' team will depart Santa Barbara Saturday morning and then stay at the Courtyard by Marriott, the tournament hotel, in Sherman Oaks on Saturday night.
