UCSB Takes Down 18th Ranked UCSD
Feb. 2, 2008 San Diego, CA
- The
3rd ranked UCSB Gauchos faced 18th ranked UC San Diego on the road in the season opener for both teams. Eight different Gauchos scored the first 8 goals of the game
as UCSB jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first ten minutes. Five of the
8 goals were assisted. The way to get multiple points during that
balanced run was to contribute on assists. Two players had a goal and
an assist and another had two assists. Senior Kristen Dickey (Davis, CA) and sophomore Maggie Aker (Oakland, CA) each had a goal and an assist during the ten minute spree. Junior Katie Moran (San
Rafael, CA) had two assists. Tritons attacker Leah Weinstein found the
net on a free position shot 10:32 into the game to get UCSD on the
board. It was 6-1 the rest of the way and the half-time score favored
UCSB 14-2.
Sarah de Crescenzo of UCSD scored the first goal of
the second half to pull the Tritons to within 14-3 but the rest of the
game was all UCSB. Six different Gauchos scored 9 unanswered goals over
a span of 21 minutes before holding onto the ball to run out the clock.
Dickey and freshman Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San
Ramon, CA) tied on high scoring honors with 6 points apiece on 5 goals
and 1 assist each. Eleven different UCSB players scored goals or
assists. Freshman Diane Clow (Poway, CA) recorded the win in goal with 2 saves on 5 shots against her.
UCSB finishes their two game road trip at NCAA DIII Claremont on Sunday in an 11am game.
