UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - UCSB extended a 5 goal halftime lead into a 12 goal win over visiting Oregon State in the opening game of the 27th Annual Santa Barbara Shootout for both teams. The Gauchos led 8-3 at halftime and then outscored the Beavers 9-2 in the second half to win 17-5. It was the first meeting between the two programs in the opening game of the Shootout. Four UCSB players scored four goals apiece to tie for leading scorer honors.  Junior Mari Cajandig (Davis, CA), sophomore Echo Meyers (Laguna Niguel, CA) and junior Madison Sabbag (Mt. View, CA) combined for 12 goals. It was a season high scoring output and nine Gaucho goals were assisted along the way to that season high. UCSB outshot Oregon State 33 to 13.

Two freshman split the game in goal for UCSB. Freshman Kaitlyn Pike (Seaholm, MI) played the first half and had 4 saves and 3 goals allowed for 57.1%. Freshman Cyrena Malkoswki (Trabuco Hills, CA) had 4 saves and 2 goals allowed for 66.7%.  Redshirt sophomore Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) led the Gauchos in the midfield with 4 draw controls, 4 caused turnovers and 5 ground balls along with 1 goal and only 1 turnover. The plus thirteen for production to turnovers is a season high from a UCSB player this year.

The nightcap game played after the UCSB win featured Brigham Young and Michigan. The Wolverines won that game 13-6 after leading 6-2 at halftime. Shootout play picks up again in 10:00am games on Friday morning at the Recreation Center Sports Complex turf, on the UCSB Lacrosse Field (aka The Pit) and at SBCC La Playa Stadium.

The Gauchos improve to 3-1 and face 5th ranked University of Georgia at 4:00pm on Friday. Oregon State drops to 0-2 and resumes play a lot sooner when they face Northeastern University at 10:00am on Friday.
