UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The Gauchos held on to win 13-12 over the club from San Diego State in a WWLL Quarterfinal at the UCSB Recreation Center Turf. UCSB is hosting the 16 team WWLL Tournament for the league's Division One, Division Two and B Division championships.  UCSB took a 9-4 halftime lead but it was a tale of two halves. While the second half wasn't pretty the better first half and a last second game winner did it for the Gauchos. The Aztecs stormed back in the second half and eventually tied it 12-12. Overtime looked likely but senior midfielder Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) scored an unassisted goal with three seconds remaining to lift UCSB into a semifinal with 5th ranked UCLA. The Bruins are second seeded here at the WWLL tournament.

Senior Megan Hughes (Tustin, CA) had a monster game to frustrate the San Diego State offense. Hughes had 7 first half saves followed by 10 second half saves for a total of 17 saves against 12 goals allowed. The 17 saves is the new WWLL Tournament record for saves in a single game. Three Gauchos scored three goals apiece. Sophomore Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA), freshman Claire Wilson (Healdsburg, CA) and senior Samm Wilson (San Jose, CA) each picked up the hat tricks. Senior midfielder Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) had 7 draw controls and 4 ground balls.

The win reversed the regular season outcome between the two teams. San Diego State won 17-13 on March 14th in Santa Barbara. The Gauchos will look to reverse their regular season result with UCLA later this afternoon too. Semifinals come up quick in the WWLL Tournament with the start times for the quarters and the semis only four hours apart. UCLA, then ranked 6th nationally, won 16-12 on March 8th. UCLA dispatched the club from UC Davis 14-8 in their quarterfinal. Game time is 2:00pm in UCSB Harder Stadium. San Diego State moves to the left in the brackets and will play UC Davis at 2:00pm in a placement game where the winner goes to the fifth place game.
