UCSB Blue Undefeated At Fall BrawlOct. 27, 2013 Santa Barbara, CA - The UCSB Blue Team, made up of UCSB 'A' Team candidates, won two and tied one on the second day of play at the Sixth Annual Fall Brawl. UCSB White, made up mostly of beginners, was 0-3 but continued to gain experience with ten beginners on the field every minute of every scrimmage. Yesterday UCSB Blue outscored the team from Whittier College, calling themselves Lax or Dye, 7-2. Today UCSB Blue won 7-5 over Claremont Colleges (Lady Cougs), 9-4 over Tri-Check (a post-collegiate team) and were tied 8-8 by Chapman University (Transformers). In all four scrimmages UCSB Blue began with a mix of probable starters on the field and worked at least eleven reserves, sometimes more, into the action. All four scrimmages ended with most of the probable starters on the sideline but a deep bench was able to either outscore or match the NCAA DIII teams and the post-collegiate club. UCSB Blue were ahead of Chapman most of the scrimmage but the Panthers came back and tied it at the end on a free position shot with seconds remaining. UCSB White featured a beginner goalie and 9 other beginners on the field at a time. Their opponents were mostly the first team, read only team, from the schools they faced. Despite this the young Gauchos were able to hang with some of the teams they played and keep some of the scrimmages closer than expected. This achievement is encouraging for the future UCSB B Team, which is the two-time defending champion of the WWLL B Division. UCSB takes a break next weekend before simultaneously competing at the Irvine Beach Breakaway Tournament and hosting the defending WWLL Division I champion Cal Poly SLO. The UCSB White Team will travel to the Irvine Tournament to get three scrimmages. The UCSB Blue team will host the Mustangs in a 1:00pm game at the UCSB Recreation Center Sports Complex turf field.
