October 12, 2008 -- Daytona Beach, FL

The Jacksonville Lacrosse Club defeated the Embry Riddle Eagles 9 - 8 at Daytona Beach in the opening game of the Florida Lacrosse League 2008-2009 season.  Jax got off to a quick start, possessing the ball for most of the first five minutes of the game before Jim Applegate (1g, 2a) scored on a feed from Scott Cleary Sr. (1a) to put the Predators on the board.  Embry Riddle put together a solid offensive attack scoring four first half goals and played tough on defense and in transition. Matt Carey (5g) and John Jackowiak (2g) added Jacksonville goals in the first half but Jax was down 4-3 at halftime.   Jody Ticer was solid in the net in the first half for the Predators.

Just as soon as Matt Carey figured out that the opposing goalie was left-handed he scored three times to open the 2nd half, including one tally rumored to have been assisted by Pat Harnett (1a).   Jackowiak added another goal on a behind the net feed from Applegate, and the Predators were up 7-6 at the end of the third quarter.  Embry Riddle battled back to take the lead at 8-7 with about eight minutes to go before Carey scored quickly off a faceoff win by Adrian Zapata to tie it. Jacksonville dominated at the faceoff X for most of the day due to the tenacious ground ball efforts of the wing-midfielders.  Zapata (1g) scored the game winner with about four minutes left and Jacksonville held on to win it with a great effort by our defensemen and solid play in the goal by Tyson Ehinger.
