Tennessee - 14: Oklahoma - 12 The Volunteers kicked off their annual Volunteer Invitational, held at the Memphis University School, with a win over the Sooners. This is the first time these two teams have met on the lacrosse field, and the game turned out to be an excellent competition.

The Vols came out with their most impressive first quarter showing this season, netting seven goals. Barry Hillyer (Memphis, tn; MUS) had a hat trick plus one, while Kevin O'Neil (Herndon, VA; Chantilly) had two and Jason Springer (Brentwood, TN; Brentwood HS) had one.

Although Oklahoma came back strong in the second quarter, scoring six goals to UT's three. This brought the score going into halftime to UT-10: OU-7. The game would be a close one after the break as both teams went goal for goal in the second half.

Senior goalie David Catterton (Brentwood, TN; Brentwood HS) had an exceptional game between the pipes for the Vols. He made 18 saves on the day, with nine in the second half. The faceoff corp for the Vols also had a strong showing. Freshmen Justin Kaemmerer (Knoxville, TN; Bearden) went 6-9 and Taylor Szalay (Memphis, TN; Houston) went 14-18 and lead the team with 8 groundballs. Longstick midfielder Chris Koloup was next for groundballs with five.

Day two of the Volunteer Invitational pits Tennessee against Iowa State University.
