Tennessee - 6: Virginia Tech - 10     The University of Tennessee Men's lacrosse team squared off against thier first conference, divisional oppponent in #9 ranked Virginia Tech on February 22nd. This was the Vol's first game with conference playoff seeding on the line against a perennialy strong contender. The game was a very physical one and remained a close bout throughout the contest.

Senior Attackman Barry hillyer (Memphis, TN: Jacksonville U.) led the scoring for the Vol's with a hat trick (3 goals). Three other Vols would score a goal a piece, while attack combo Jack Donelan and Paul Dingee (Brewster, NY: Brewster HS) would tally two assists.

Sophomore Midfielder Matt Herner (Louisville, KY: Trinity) opened the scoring in the first quarter and was the lone tally in the first quarter. Hillyer netted two goals in the second quarter to close out the first half of play. Virginia Tech lead the Vols going into the third quarter 4-3 and cashed in two unaswered goals going into the fourth quarter.

The Vols attempted to rally against a three point fourth quarter deficit, out-shooting the Hokies 11-7 and cashing in three times with goals from Hillyer, Jason Springer (Brentwood, TN: Brentwood HS) and Kevin O'Neil (Herndon, VA: Chantilly). But were unable to overcome a four point output from the Hokie offense.

Freshmen Faceoff Midfielders Justin Kaemmerer (Knoxville, TN: Bearden HS, West Knox Warriors) and Taylor Szalay (Memphis, TN: Houston HS) had five faceoffs to best the Hokies faceoff unit 10-9. Szalay also led the team in groundballs, scooping up five, while Sophomore Defender Stephan Hatfield (Oak Ridge, TN: Oak Ridge HS, Tenn. Wesleyan) grabbed four. Virginia Tech would barely edge the Vols in groundballs 35-32.

Senior Goaltender David Catterton (Brentwood, TN: Brentwood HS) put in an excellent showing between the pipes. He made 18 saves, many in cluctch moments, that allowed the Vols to contend for much of the game.

For the second match of the weekend, the Vols face an unranked Georgia Tech squad on Sunday, February 24th.
