The University of Tennessee Men’s Lacrosse team visited Ponte Vedra, Fl. to face off against the Florida State Seminoles. Tennessee came out hot in the first quarter, but mistakes led to the Vols attempting a comeback that came up short as FSU had two dominate quarters of their own.
Tennessee scored first as freshman attackmen David Fluharty (Millsboro, DE- Sussex Tech) found junior midfielder Woody Kidd (Burke, VA- Lake Braddock Secondary) for a quick strike. Controlling the ball and playing solid defense, the Volunteers extended their lead to two when fellow freshman Fran Chatfield (Cincinnati, OH- Seven Hills) hit Fluharty with an accurate pass as he cut across the crease. The Seminoles answered with a goal of their own, but before the quarter ended Kidd added another on a self-created goal.
The second quarter was marred by turnovers and miscues on both sides of the ball. Tennessee was unable to take advantage of their first quarter momentum as FSU struck early and often scoring eight goals in the second. The teams entered halftime with FSU leading 9-3.
The Volunteers didn’t give up however as junior midfielder John Ellis Porter (Franklin, Tenn.-Franklin HS) scored as Tennessee attempted to regain control of the game. Porter then assisted junior attackmen Chris McDonald (Germantown, Tenn.-Houston) as a comeback began to form.  FSU methodically scored three straight goals as they kept the Vols at bay. However the Seminoles began to make mistakes of their own as sophomore midfielder Tray Harrell (Marietta, GA-Kell HS) scored on a loose ball breakaway. Another transition goal was notched by Tennessee as sophomore midfielder Sam Kachline assisted McDonald for his second goal. Taking advantage of FSU’s man down unit, senior attackmen John Wilson (Franklin, Tenn.- Ravenwood/Gettysburg) found Porter for his third of the day. Before the third quarter could end junior midfielder John Honan (Germantown, Tenn.-Houston) scored with three seconds left bringing the score to 9-12 as the sideline erupted.
Unfortunately Tennessee’s third quarter efforts weren’t enough to complete their comeback against FSU. The fourth quarter was controlled by FSU as they scored five goals to great a comfortable lead at 17-9 as they went on to win by that score.
Tennessee knew it had its chances throughout the game but weren’t able to play four consistent quarters, a trend that has plagued them so far this 2011 season. The Volunteers however did not leave discouraged, with knowledge that they can indeed run with one of the top tier programs in the MCLA. If they put their abilities together for the entirety of games the Vols have a chance to win big games the rest of the season.
