The University of Tennessee Men’s Lacrosse team hosted the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Saturday Feb. 12. The Volunteers for the most part controlled the game as they went on to win 16-8. The team was coming off a poor performance versus Clemson and a hard week of practice which paid its dividends during the scrimmage.

Junior midfielder Woody Kidd (Burke, VA- Lake Braddock Secondary) scored the game’s opening goal to start the Vols off strong. Freshman attackmen David Fluharty (Millsboro, DE- Sussex Tech) soon scored the team’s second goal, taking an early 2-0 lead. The Mountaineers were resilient however as quickly tied the game at 2 apiece. Before the quartered ended junior attackmen Chris McDonald (Germantown, Tenn. – Houston) caught and dumped in Tennessee’s third goal of the quarter.

An offensive explosion occurred in the second quarter as the Vols erupted for nine goals. Senior attackmen John Wilson (Franklin, Tenn. – Ravenwood/Gettysburg) began the onslaught with quick takeaway on an attempted pass to the goalie for a goal on the crease. Tennessee’s defense would shut down the Mountaineer offense causing takeaways and successfully clearing the ball throughout the quarter. While App. St. couldn’t get their offense going the Vols scored eight more goals before halftime. Those who scored were as follows: Scott Ford (Franklin, TN – Ravenwood), McDonald, Jack Donelan (Brewster, NY – Brewster), Fluharty twice, John Wilson, Brett Parisi (Knoxville, Tenn. – West Knox), and Fluharty once more. The two teams went into the half with Tennessee leading 12-2.

After halftime Tennessee began to run through its roster as to make sure everyone contributed on the field. Appalachian State came out firing as they took advantage of Tennessee turnovers scoring two straight before Donelan answered to put the Vols up 13-4. Senior transfer Brett Harper (Knoxville, Tenn. – Farragut/Tennessee Wesleyan College) then returned the lead to ten with his first goal of the game. The Mountaineers did continue to try and chip away at the lead, yet McDonald scored late in the third on a fast break, bringing the score to 15-5.

In the fourth quarter Tennessee did experience laps of relaxing too much as Appalachian State did score three more times. The Vols’ lone score of the quarter came from Harper on his second goal of the day. The Volunteers were victorious with a final score of 16-8. The Volunteers had assist on 13 of their 16 goals with Jack Donelan leading the way with 4 assist followed by Chris McDonald with 2 assist.

A thank you goes out to the Appalachian State lacrosse team for traveling to Knoxville as we wish them the best as their season goes moves forward.
