The University of Tennessee Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to Clemson, SC in a division match-up versus the Clemson Tigers (February 5). They failed to “get off the bus” however and were defeated 10-3 in a sloppy game that mimicked the unfortunate field conditions.

The first quarter was dominated by the Tigers as they scored five unanswered goals. Tennessee seemed to cut the early 2-0 deficit with a goal from John Honan (Germantown, Tenn. - Houston High), however an illegal substitution negated the score. Clemson meanwhile took advantage of the opportunities given to them as Tennessee had trouble clearing and possessing the ball, an unfortunate trend throughout the game.

Tennessee came out in the second quarter with some improvements as both ends tightened up their play. John Ellis Porter (Franklin, Tenn. – Franklin High) scored the Vols’ first goal, yet struggles continued and it’d be their only first half score.

The third quarter was lackluster with Clemson scoring another goal to push their lead to 7-1. In the fourth Tennessee could only mount two goals to Clemson’s three. Porter notched his second goal of the day and John Wilson (Franklin, Tenn. – Ravenwood High/Gettysburg) scored his first of the season.

Tennessee walked away from the game knowing they underachieved greatly and needed to find the fire that led them last year to a SELC #3 seed in the playoffs. A hard week of practice led up to a scrimmage versus Appalachian State, a Division II team, as the Vols intended to improve as a team.
