We were pleased to host Tennessee Wesleyan and Sewanee (NCAA Div III) today on our Intramural Field at Tennessee for our annual early season play day.

In the first scrimmage of the day Tennessee was defeated by Tennessee Wesleyan 8-7. The Vols gave up a 4-0 1st quarter lead before rallying in the second half to tie the game at 7-7 with 2 minutes left in the 4th. Tennessee Wesleyan scored the go ahead score with 45 seconds left to win the early scrimmage 8-7. Not taking anything away from Tennessee Wesleyan, they played a fundamentally solid game and pulled out a nice scrimmage victory. I think they are positioned well to challenge for the top spot in Division II of the SELC. The Vols stuck to a predetermined substitution schedule in order to give all players an opportunity to prove themselves in early season competition.

The second game of the day was Tennessee Wesleyan against Sewanee and from my recollection Sewanee was victorious with a score 14-7 or 14-6. It was 5-4 at half with Sewanee in the lead but two games back to back was a bit much for the Bulldogs and Sewanee stretched the lead out in the second half to cruise to the victory.

The third game of the day was Tennessee against Sewanee. The Vols stuck to their regular season rotation against the Tigers and came out ahead in a complete and utter slug fest. The Vols jumped out to a 3-0 1st quarter lead before Sewanee went on a 5 goal run to take a 5-3 lead early in the 2nd qtr. The Vols rallied late in the 2nd to tie the game at 6-6 at half time. The game was back and forth in front of a strong home crowd of over 150+ in the 3rd and finished with Sewanee ahead 10-9. The 4th quarter was all Vols as they outscored Sewanee 4-2 despite the Tennessee defense and goalie playing with the evening sun in their eyes during the quarter for a final score of 13-12 in Tennessee's favor.

A special thank you to both Tennessee Wesleyan and Sewanee for joining us for our annual January play day weekend. We wish both respective program's the best as they pursue their goals for the spring season. Both programs are in great hands, are headed in the right direction, and we look forward to cheering them on this spring.

Nothing wrong with sunny and mid 50's for the games in Knoxville on the last weekend in January either!
