Important Fall InformationSep. 12, 2010 Important Information from Coach Matt at Interest Meeting:
Travel Team:
We are planning on making a small adjustment to our structure this year. The club has been continuing to grow year over year and in order to best manage that growth we will be maintaining a 40 man travel roster for the spring. I don't believe in having a one week tryout to establish who those 40 players are, so we will be using the entire fall ball season as the tryout. My intent is to have a first draft depth chart created by our first games at Sewanee on October 2nd, and will update it in mid October and at the end of fall ball. I know of several returners that have fall conflicts due to work or extra class loads that will be unable to participate heavily in fall ball. I feel that the coaching staff has a good handle on the ability levels of those returners and will know generally where those guys will fall in terms of the depth chart.
If you are an individual that does not end up making the 40 man travel roster, I very much hope you will stay with the team to continue to develop your skill set with us instead of not participating at all. Many players physically mature late or get much better after a season in the MCLA and if you quit you will miss out on that opportunity. The nontravel guys will be on the team and on the roster, and will suit up for home games. The dues for a non traveler will be $550 plus you must buy the equipment package if you are a first year player, for total cost of $950. Remember the Fall dues payment of $300 is due by the Thursday September 23rd practice ($50 for shorts and penny, $250 in dues). So a nontraveler would only owe another $300 in the spring to stay on the squad. I am also working to arrange a couple home exhibition games where our starters and 2nd line midfielders will not suit up and the heavy load will fall on the nontravelers to make sure you get game experience to help you continue to develop.
Practice Schedule:
We will be practicing on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Safety City Park off on Corcorde Drive adjacent to campus.
Safety City Park located at 165 S. Concord Ave, Knoxville, TN 37919. If you need a ride or can give a ride please meet at TRECS at 6:30pm.
Sunday lacrosse:
We will be playing scrimmaging most Sundays either on the turf or at Safety CIty park. These are meant as an opportunity to suit up in a relaxed environment to keep a stick in your hand and to allow you to develop relationships with guys on the team that you may not see all the time during your day. I would encourage you to introduce yourself to other newcomers and players you don't recognize. You will go to war with each other and have each others backs, so you might as well know what the guys name is.
Fall Ball Dates:
We will be playing at Sewanee on Saturday October 2nd. The first game is at 10:30am and the second game is at 1pm both against Sewanee on the 2nd. Sewanee is carrying over 40 guys at this point as well and we have decided that playing two games will best allow both teams to insure everyone gets a fair amount of time on the field so we can fairly evaluate the talent we have.
The following weekend we are hosting Kentucky and Tennessee Wesleyan on Sunday October 10th. We will play Tennessee Wesleyan at 10:30 am on the turf, and Kentucky at 3pm on the turf. Kentucky and Tenn Wesleyan will play between our two games. These will be 4 quarter games. I encourage you to invite your families to attend one or both events.
Strength and Conditioning:
Coach Hurley has volunteered to take on the role of Strength and Conditioning Coach and Coach Mike will also be assisting Coach Hurley in this endevour. We will be sending some follow up information out about the 3 day a week team lifting schedule. We are working on arranging a weight room where the team can workout together on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays in between the Tuesday and Thursday field practices. This lifting is voluntary, but I plan on attending many of the lifting dates and it will make a difference in the depth chart. If two guys are equal and one lifted all Fall and shows the heart and desire to voluntarily push themselves we will put them on the travel squad over a guy that has not lifted at all. I don't mind if you prefer to lift alone, it's the results I'm after. If your shedule doesn't coincide with the team arranged time that is not a big deal, I'll be able to see on the field who is lifting and who isn't... it's easy to see.
