Volunteers victorious over Tennessee Wesleyan College 11-8 in ugly field conditions

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Mar. 29, 2009

After several days of rain Fulton Bottoms field adjacent to the University of Tennessee campus was "barely playable".  The Volunteers were unable to play on our normal home turf field due to soccer games scheduled for the day.   The field conditions helped keep the game close as footing and stick conditions deteriorated throughout the game.

The game started off with the Volunteers very hot as the raced out to a 9-5 halftime lead on 25 first half shots.  As the second half got under way it was very apparent that the mud covering almost every players pocket was going to make it difficult to make accurate passes and shots.  Both teams struggled moving the ball in the 3rd quarter and the score was still 9-5 at the beginning of the 4th quarter.  Both teams were able to find the shooting touch in the 4th quarter as the teams traded goals to bring the final score to 11-8 Tennessee.

Point leaders on the day were Jack Cleary (Centenial / Nashville, TN) with 4 G and 2 A and Chris McDonald (Houston / Memphis, TN) with 4 G on the day.  The ground ball leader on the day was Chris White (Father Ryan / Nashville, TN) with 8 GBs, Chris also contributed 1 G and 1 A for a full line of stats.  Freshman Goalie Jordan Blazer (Libertyville, IL) also had a big day with 21 saves on 29 shots on goal.

Tennessee improved to 8-3 on the year with the win against the Bulldogs from Tennessee Wesleyan.
