Volunteers lose hard fought battle with undefeated Auburn University 8-7Mar. 6, 2009 Auburn surged out to a 4-0 first quarter lead to put the Volunteers on their heels. Tennessee was able to make important adjustments at the 1st break and came out ready to play in the 2nd quarter. Tennessee's defense held Auburn to two 2nd quarter goals as the Volunteers poured in 6 2nd quarter goals to tie the game at 6-6 at halftime. The 3rd quarter was owned by both defenses as the Tennessee and Auburn offenses struggled to find the back of the net and the 3rd ended the way it started locked up at 6-6 still. Auburn was able to strike first in the 4th quarter going up 7-6 before Tennessee tied the game back with 7 minutes to go. Auburn scored their 8th and final goal with 2 minutes left in the game and Tennessee couldn't tie the game despite a fast break opportunity with 30 seconds left. Overall it was a clean, hard fought game and carries on a tradition of tough games between the Volunteers and the Tigers. The Volunteer offense was led by Patrick Stewart (Memphis, TN / MUS) with 3 goals and Woody Kidd (Burke, VA) with 1 goal and 1 assist.
