Georgia Sends The Vols Back To Tennessee With First Conference LossFeb. 28, 2009
The skies were angry in Athens on Saturday as heavy rains swept over much of the region. The game was moved to Alpharetta, GA where the game was played. Despite the weather Georgia opened the game quickly with a goal from Will Bryant. It did not take long for UGA to extend their lead as Corey Osekowski and Shaun McGahan started working some great combinations. Shaun tallied twice from great feeds from Corey Osekowski. McGahan returned the favor by feeding Osekowski just before the end of the quarter. The quarter ended with Georgia blanking Tennessee 4-0. Georgia picked up where they left off, with Max Bringe winning every face-off. Will Bryant picked up a ground ball and cruised down the field and cranked in his second goal of the game to put Georgia up 5-0. UT finally broke the strong defensive barrier set up by UGA and closed the gap to 5-1. As the Dawgs continued to dominate they unleashed a flurry of shots. The Tennesse goalie was playing exceptionally well making several crucial stops. After a brilliant save, Shaun McGahan picked up the ground ball and fired a laser from the top center of th box to put UGA up 6-1. The rain turned to a steady mist and the half came to an end with UGA leading the Vols 6-1. As the second half begins, the Georgia D continues to stymie Tennessee. Tennessee goalie is called for playing without a mouthguard and UGA takes advantage of the EMO on a goal by Osekowski. Assist goes to Battey. UGA extends their lead as the UT defender loses his stick and Will Bryant cranks a rocket shot to put the Dawgs up 8-1. The 3rd Q ends with the same score. The fourth quarter opened with a strip at midfield by Will Bryant. He sets up the next goal with an awesome pass to Hayes Burrow. Burrow has a quick look pass to Corey Osekowski who finishes off the play with his third goal of the day. UGA 9, UT 1. UGA continues to dominate and UT is looking a bit frustrated. Patrick Battey feeds Corey Osekowski who slips the rock into the cage for a 10-1 lead. Georgia wins the face-off again and a bit of ruckus breaks out on the field. Slash and push called on UT. Dawgs with a 2 man EMO. Dawgs take advantage of the situation and Battey feeds Mack O'Berry an 11-1 lead. UT is able to grab a goal back and close the gap to 11-2 with 5:41 to play. The game winds down with the final score 11-2. With the victory UGA moves atop the conference table as Tennessee loses its first conference game.
