Tennessee opens league, division play with victory over KentuckyFeb. 6, 2009 The Volunteers opened their season on Friday evening, with a commanding victory over the division foe, University of Kentucky. The volunteer offense started out slow, only notching two goals in the first quarter of play. However, due to fantastic play on the defensive side of the ball and superb goaltending from freshman net minder, Jordan Blazer, The Volunteers were able to maintain a 4-0 lead going into half. The Scoring really opened up in the second half with goals coming from Kevin O'Neill, Jack Cleary, Patrick Stewart, and Woody Kidd, which rounded out 8 unanswered goals. Kentucky netted their first two goals inside of 4 minutes, in the third quarter of play. Tennessee then rattled off 5 straight with two each coming from Patrick Hudson and the senior sensation Kyle Bird, respectively, bringing the score to 13-2 with a little over 5 minutes left in the game. Kentucky would add 2 more; however the Volunteer lead proved insurmountable. Due to an extraordinary effort from the volunteer defensive front and a dominant second half performance by freshman goaltender, David Catterton, the Tennessee Volunteers will move to 1-0 for the season, and in the division.
