Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB was just about even with Cal Poly SLO in most categories except the final score as the Mustangs prevailed 14-8 in a WWLL semifinal contest. Draw controls were even at 12 per team and Cal Poly held a slight edge on shots at 27 to 26. The final score did not reflect the play up and down the field with both teams seeming evenly matched.

Cal Poly SLO senior goalie Kelly Harris (Scotts Valley, CA) stymied the UCSB offense with a 19 save performance and held the Gauchos to 3 of 13 shooting on free positions shots from the 8 meter arc. For good measure Harris added some point blank saves when UCSB had opportunities on the doorstep too.

Late in the first half UCSB freshman Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) scored to pull UCSB within one goal at 5-6 on a pass from sophomore Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA).  A UCSB point blank shot on their next possession was stopped by Harris and the Mustangs used that to get a goal with 3 seconds left in the half. Instead of a 6-6 halftime the Mustangs were up by two at the intermission. UCSB earned the first two balls of the second half but couldn't get goals and eventually the Mustangs went up 10-5. With about 16 minutes remaining the Gauchos made it 10-6 on a free position goal by junior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) but Cal Poly responded to that with three unanswered goals over ten minutes. After that it was just a matter of the Mustangs not giving UCSB too many chances and they didn't.

UCSB, the third seed here in the tournament, dropped to 12-6 overalll while second seeded Cal Poly SLO improved to 11-5. UCSB faces Santa Clara at Noon on Sunday on UCSB Recreation Center Turf #2 in the WWLL third place game while the Mustangs face USC in the championship game. The Trojans upset top seeded Santa Clara 12-11 in the other WWLL semifinal. It was one of two upsets during the day. SBCC upset Nevada, Reno in the WWLL Division Two bracket and faces top seeded UC Santa Cruz in the championship game for that division at Noon on Sunday on UCSB RecCen Turf #4.
