UCSB WLAX File PhotoMorgan Hill, CA - The Gauchos resumed play after time off the game field during final exams and spring break. The respite in the schedule appeared to do them well and UCSB got a runaway win over unranked University of Rhode Island. The Gauchos outscored the over-matched Rams 20-3 and picked up their tenth win of the season. Some of the early action was a little sloppy but UCSB was up 4-1 despite a few turnovers and then started connecting enroute to a 11-2 halftime lead. During the second half UCSB scored the first 3 goals and the last 6 goals, sandwiched around the lone Rhode Island second half tally.

Eight UCSB players scored and a trio of Gauchos had 6 points each. Senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led all scorers with 5 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA) had 2 goals and 4 assists while freshman Claudia Hammerschmidt (Armonk, NY) had 4 goals and 2 assists. A 3 goal and 2 assist performance by junior Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) fell just 1 point short of making it a four by six for UCSB.

Senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) had 7 saves while allowing only 3 goals. Hammerschmidt snared 5 draw controls while Evans and freshman Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) had 4 ground balls each. Telling for UCSB was a zero foul game. The Gauchos committed no fouls that gave the Rams free position shots. That had a lot to do with UCSB being on offense a bunch, and not on defense much, but fouling inside the 8 meter arc would have been something that let Rhode Island pick up some freee shots on goal. That didn't happen and UCSB outshot the Rams 24-10.

"The big score might not make this obvious but we put in some ball control strategies and placed an increased emphasis on taking care of the ball while also making smarter decisions for this weekend," said UCSB Head Coach Paul Ramsey.

"We expect these to pay off for us in closer games too."

The 6th ranked Gauchos improved to 10-4 overall and next face 5th ranked University of Texas on Sunday. The Longhorns were upset 11-8 by 16th ranked Cal Poly San Luis Obispo this morning. Rhode Island next plays Cal Poly this afternoon.
