UCSB WLAX File PhotoEl Cajon, CA - UCSB broke open a close game with a 14-4 second half to win 21-12 on the road in a Western Women's Lacrosse League inter-region game with University of San Diego at Granite Hills High School. The game was played there instead of at San Diego after a scheduling snaffu noticed only late Friday evening.

The Gauchos were down 9-12 early in the second half but scored the last 12 goals of the game to run away with it over the last 18 minutes and 50 seconds of the contest. UCSB outshot the Toreros 16-10 in the first half and 35-21 overall but were unable to find the back of the net early in the game. Despite the shot total the Gauchos trailed 7-8 at halftime.

It was a battle of firsts with UCSB in first place in WWLL Central and San Diego in first place in WWLL South. The Toreros came out like they wanted to be first overall and it took the Gauchos a while to react. When they did it was over in a matter of minutes. The third goal of the scoring spree tied the game 12-12 with 17 minutes remaining. Senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) assisted freshman Amanda Shoemaker (Poway, CA) for that tying goal and the winning goal came when Mitchell scored on a free position shot 47 seconds later. An awakened UCSB then put in another 8 goals over the next 13 minutes to close out the game.

Sophomore Lindsay Alex (Santa Ana, CA) had 2 goals and 6 assists with both her goals and 4 of her assists coming in the second half. The 8 points led UCSB in scoring. Mitchell was close behind with 4 goals and 2 assists.  Freshman Nicole Rockwell (San Jose, CA) had 4 ground balls and 4 draw controls. Senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) entered the game with 10 minutes remaining in the first half and made 8 saves on 14 shots against during 40 minutes of action.

Both programs appreciate the graciousness of the staff at Granite Hills for hosting the WWLL game on short notice and doing a very nice job at it as well. The Gauchos improved to 7-3 overall while San Diego dropped to to 5-3. UCSB plays again Sunday at San Diego State University in an 11:00am game on the turf. The Toreros host Sonoma State next Friday in a 7:00pm game at Manchester Field.
