UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - UCSB found itself playing catch-up most of the game against the third ranked Gators and closed the gap but fell just short as time expired. The Gauchos came back from being down three by scoring two goals in the final seven minutes but ran out of time. Florida scored to go ahead with 6:56 remaining and they were up 9-6.  UCSB followed that with an unassisted goal by freshman Claudia Hammerschmidt (Armonk, NY). It was her third goal of the game.

When senior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) was fouled on her way to goal she converted and all of a sudden it was 9-8 in favor of Florida with 39 seconds. UCSB won the draw and had a chance to get it to overtime but Florida goalie Heather Gable (Longwood, FL) saved this free position shot and the rebound off her stick was loose for most of the final seven seconds of the game before finishing in the stick of a Florida defender. The Gauchos outshot Florida 23-16 but the Gators finished their opportunities better today.

"Sometimes we start fast and cool off.  Other times we start slow and build momentum," pondered UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey.

"We are looking to put two halves together against Michigan on Sunday."

UCSB dropped to 4-2 with the loss while Florida improved to 5-1. The Gauchos face 5th ranked University of Michigan (2-1) in a 12:00pm game at the RecCen Sports Complex Stadium in the final game of the Shootout for both teams.
