UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - The Gauchos hosted University of Arizona in a Friday night game at the new RecCen turf stadium and put away the Wildcats with a powerful second half in a 19-6 win. UCSB struck first with an unassisted goal by freshman Charlotte Brooks (Owings Mills, MD). Arizona responded with two straight goals and the Gauchos trailed by a goal three and a half minutes into the game. Freshman Claudia Hammerschmidt (Armonk, NY) assisted junior Samm Wilson (San Jose, CA) about 90 seconds later and then UCSB passed Arizona at the 7:13 mark on a free position goal by Katie Hubbert (San Jose, CA) to go ahead by one. The Gauchos closed out the second half outscoring the Wildcats 7-2 to go into halftime leading 10-4. Brooks scored 4 of her game high 5 goals in the first half, including two in the last 3 minutes of the period. Wilson, similarly, scored 3 of her 4 goals in the first half.

UCSB kept up the output in the second half outscoring the Wildcats 3 to 2 before scoring 6 unanswered goals over a fourteen minute span to provide the final 13 goal difference a few minutes before the game ended. Both goalies played well with freshman Morgan Ryan (Salt Lake City, UT) saving 60% in the first half and senior Megan Hughes (Santa Ana, CA) saving 71.4% in the second half. Ryan and Hughes benefited from solid play by their defense, who gelled quickly after allowing the two quick goals early by the Wildcats.

The Gauchos improved to 2-0 and Arizona dropped to 0-1. Up next for UCSB is a trip to UC Berkeley for their first away game of the season on February 9th. The Wildcats continue their road trip with a game at USC on Saturday.
