UCSB Attacker Katie Mitchell Up For Pre-Season Player Of The Year

Bookmark and Share Printer Friendly Nov. 17, 2012

Katie MitchellBaltimore, MD - Lacrosse Magazine has listed UCSB senior Katie Mitchell as one of five candidates for National Pre-Season Player Of The Year in WCLA Division One.

Mitchell played midfield her first three years at UCSB but is moving to attack this season to keep her closer to the other team's net at most times. The senior from Lafayette, CA has scored 163 goals and assisted on 63 more her first three years having to play at both ends of the field. UCSB hopes that relieving her of defensive end duties frees her up to be more aggressive and creative about getting to the goal.

Everyone interested in the outcome of Player Of The Year may cast a vote of their own and keep up with voting on the Lacrosse Magazine On-Line page set up for it.

Lacrosse Magazine's Preseason Players of the Year
WCLA Division I

Hayley Bernstein, Colorado State, Sr. M
Bernstein had her best individual year in 2012, earning first team All-America honors, but CSU failed to win a national title for the first time. Bernstein will be determined to go out on top.

Maggie Burke, Santa Clara, Sr. M
Burke is one of the most prolific scorers in WCLA history, scoring a ridiculous 118 goals last year. She was named the top midfielder in the WCLA last year and is a three-time All-American.

Katie Mitchell, UCSB, Sr. M
You might say Katie Mitchell is trending upwards. A 50-point freshman season, second team All-American as a sophomore and a 102-point season last year when she was named a first team All-American. How good will she be if this keeps up?

Emily Seidel, Georgia, Sr. G
A one-goal loss to Florida late in the season denied Georgia a bid to nationals. Seidel, named the top goalie in the WCLA last year, will be the key to getting back to the championship tournament.

Sarah Tanabe, Colorado, Sr. A
A two-time All-American (first team in 2012, second team in 2011), Tanabe is one of the top offensive threats in the country and a key player for a team with national championship dreams.

Tidbits:  Two Gauchos have received National Player of The Year Honors. Brooke Julicher (Philadelphia, PA) accomplished it her senior year in 2007 and Katie Moran (San Rafael, CA) accomplished it her senior year in 2009. On the men's side this year Lacrosse Magazine has selected UCSB senior C.J. Jacobs as one of five finalists for Pre-Season Player Of The Year in MCLA Division One. The Gaucho women open up the regular season hosting USC on Saturday, February 26th, at 12:00pm. The Gaucho men open up the regular season hosting USC the same day in a 2:00pm game.
