UCSB Bests Talented Alumni Team 14-4
Santa Barbara, CA - UCSB women's lacrosse played their final fall ball game of 2012 against an energetic alumni team and won 14-4 on a breezy sunswept day at the UCSB Lacrosse Field, known as The Pit. The young UCSB team led 5-0 partway through the first half and led 8-1 at halftime. Twenty-two alumni made it back to UCSB for the game and most of them played in it. Several alumni made the trip for the camraderie and their love of Santa Barbara and former teammates. Twenty-three players suited up for UCSB and all of them played. The Gauchos were up 12-1 in the second half when the alumni snuck an extra player onto the field. UCSB held them scoreless for about ten minutes but were similarly held scoreless. When the alumni inserted another extra player they scored a goal to make it 12-2 in favor of UCSB. Encouraged by that success the alumni put another extra player on the field to outnumber UCSB by three players. It was all in good fun so the referees let it go. From that point a young UCSB squad, determined to hold off the alumni despite the odds, played them even at 2 goals apiece for the final 14-4 score. The outcome reversed the 2011 alumni game result when the alumni beat UCSB 8-7 on a last second goal as time expired. In that game the alumni came back from being on the short end of a 7-5 score with less than five minutes to go in the game and scored 3 straight goals to steal it. The 2012-13 UCSB squad was primed and ready to start fast and belay the possibility of any such heroics. It was a good result for the young UCSB team against an alumni squad with eight WDIA or WCLA All-Americans playing against them. Sixteen of the 23 Gauchos are freshmen or sophomores so UCSB appears to have reloaded after graduating seven senior starters from the 2011-12 team. The next UCSB Lacrosse Alumni Weekend is November 8 - 10, 2013. It is an annual event, held traditionally on the second weekend of November.
