Three-Time Defending Champ LAX Northwest Rippers Drop UCSB 7-6Oct. 27, 2012
The Gauchos fell just short of a complete comeback in the running clock format tournament. Games are 20 minute halves with the clock running for the first 18 minutes of each half. UCSB got themselve back into the game with a hard ride that caused three straight turnovers that resulted in 2 unanswered goals to get them within striking distance at 5-7 with two minutes left in the game. At this point the clock was stopping on every whistle and time wasn't evaporating quite as fast for UCSB. A draw control and some ball movement offense put the ball in the stick of junior Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) where she was fouled before she could shoot. Evans netted the 8 meter opportunity and UCSB was down by one with under a minute to play. It looked like a UCSB fastbreak in the closing minute was going to give UCSB a chance to tie the score but a body ball call in the midfield following an interception gave the ball to LAX Northwest. The Rippers adeptly ran out the clock on offense to get the win. UCSB plays at 8:00am at Kapiolani Park in a placement game that takes the winner to the 5th place game of the tournament.
