Gauchos Pick Up 14-11 Win At 8th Ranked Cal Poly SLOFeb. 24, 2012 San Luis Obispo, CA - UCSB overcame a 1-5 deficit early in the game on the road at Cal Poly SLO to tie the game 7-7 by halftime. The 7th ranked Gauchos then broke the game open with a 7-2 burst in the first 20 minutes of the second half to clinch it. UCSB led 14-9 with 10 minutes remaining, worked reserves into the game and held on to win 14-11 over the 8th ranked Mustangs. UCSB junior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led all scorers with 4 goals and 1 assist while seven Gauchos contributed to the offense. Junior Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) picked up 4 ground balls. Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 12 saves to get the win. "We overcame a rocky start getting down by 4 goals and then playing catch-up quite well to outscore them 6-2 to close out the half," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey. It was more than just playing catch-up as the Gauchos went on a spree in the middle part of the game. With that 6-2 finish to the first half and the 7-2 start of the second half UCSB outscored the Mustangs 13-4 over the middle 40 minutes of the contest. "It's a tough place to play and it's a Friday night after school all day and then the drive here so when we were down 5-1 it was easy to think back to the 21-9 drubbing they handed us here in 2010," commented Ramsey. "But this team did not get down despite the early score and kept plugging away and scrapping and the positive energy we have just took over." The Gauchos improved to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in the WWLL Central. The Mustangs dropped to 4-3, 1-2. UCSB plays next at home when they host UC Davis on Saturday, March 3rd. Cal Poly SLO has two weeks to prepare for Santa Clara and hosts them on March 3rd.
