Gauchos Get 19-11 Road Win at University of ArizonaBox Score
Feb. 11, 2012 Tucson, AZ - UCSB used a strong second half offense to distance themselves from the Wildcats scratching at their heals all first half. After a 6-4 first half the Gauchos and Arizona had a wild second half scoring 20 goals between them. UCSB scored 13 of those 20 goals to get a 19-11 win at Murphy Field. The Gauchos outshot the Wildcats 47-27 overall and won the ground ball battle with 33 pick-ups.
UCSB scored the first 3 goals of the game and led by that many until Arizona scored an assisted goal at 18:53. It took almost the first 19 minutes for both teams to get 4 goals but the next ten minutes saw Arizona and UCSB combine to score 6 goals. The pace of play had picked up on both sides and it was a sign of what was coming in the second half. The Gauchos scored 5 of the first 6 goals of the second half and the score was 12-6 UCSB 12 minutes into it. The last 18 minutes of the game UCSB outscored the Wildcats 7-4 and finished the game with the ball to get the 19-11 win.
UCSB junior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals and 1 assist. Sophomore Blair Evans (Salinas, CA) was second overall with 4 goals. Eight UCSB players contributed to the team scoring. Sarah Fuchs (Bayshore, NY) led the Wildcats with 3 goals. Gaucho senior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 14 saves for 56%.
The Gauchos improved to 2-0 with the win and continue their road trip with an 11:00am game at Arizona State Univeristy on Sunday. The Sundevils are 1-0 after a 17-4 win over USC last Sunday.
