UCSB WLAX File PhotoSanta Barbara, CA - UC Santa Barbara opened the season with a 13-6 win at home over the club from UC Berkeley. Up 9-1 a little over 26 minutes into the game the 7th ranked Gauchos out-played the Golden Bears most of the contest. Unranked Berkeley didn't roll over and made some things happen for themselves in the middle part of the game but the Gauchos responded by holding the Bears scoreless over the last 11 minutes and 31 seconds. Any chance of a UC Berkeley rally was stymied by the UCSB defensive effort.

UCSB junior Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) led all scorers with 5 goals and 1 assist. Mitchell also had 5 ground balls, 3 caused turnovers, 2 draw controls and no fouls or penalties. The midfielder was 5 for 5 on shooting with a mix of solo efforts, cuts for feeds on assisted plays and free position shots. Senior Jordan Venetis (Thousand Oaks, CA) was similarly efficient on her opportunities scoring 3 goals on 3 shots. Senior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had a career best game. Centner and the defense allowed just 6 goals from 22 Berkeley shots on goal, giving Center 72.7% to start the season. The senior and her defense were also effective on clears getting 21 out of 26 transition opportunities into the offensive end. Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) had 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers to lead defenders.

UC Berkeley had six different players score a goal apiece. Midfielder Sargis Madison (San Marcos, CA), who scored 3 goals against Santa Clara last week, notched only one goal in this game.

UCSB improved to 1-0 and takes to the road next weekend for games at University of Arizona and Arizona State University. UC Berkeley dropped to 0-2 and next faces University of Wyoming at the Santa Barbara Shootout February 18th.
