UCSB File PhotoScottsdale, AZ - Santa Clara scored 2 goals 13 seconds apart to break open an 8-8 tie with less than a minute remaining in the first half of the WCLA 3rd Place Game at the Scottsdale Sports Complex. Sophomore Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) finished an 8 meter free position shot with 3:19 remaining in the first half and it looked like it might be a tied game going into halftime. The Broncos had led by as many  as 3 goals before the Gauchos closed the gap. Then a few minutes later Santa Clara won a loose ball and fastbreaked to a 9-8 lead with 40 seconds left in the half, following up with another fastbreak goal off a draw control with 27 seconds left.

The second half was mostly Santa Clara outshooting the Gauchos. The momentum from their two quick goals  carried them well into the middle of the second half before UCSB got their first goal of that half with a Mitchell feed to senior Alyssa Nelsen (Denver, CO) with 18:02 remaining in the game.  The score after that was 13-9 in favor of Santa Clara. UCSB pulled to within 3 again on a goal by junior Maegan Cruse (San Diego, CA) but that was as close as UCSB could get it despite trying to make something happen over the last 15 minutes of the game. The Broncos got a few no help there goals when the Gauchos extended out on them and an open net goal when goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) came out to help double team in an attempt at making something happen.

The Broncos outshot UCSB 40-28.  Mitchell led UCSB with 5 goals and 2 assists. Centner had 16 saves facing mostly open shooters benefitting from a crisp and efficient Santa Clara offense. UCSB concluded the season 15-9 overall and ranked 7th in the final season poll but having upset 2nd seeded Florida in the quarterfinals of the WCLA Tournament along the way to a 4th place finish. Freshman Blair Evans (Santa Catalina, CA) was selected to the All-Tournament team.
