Broncos Catch Gauchos in WWLL Semifinal

Santa Barbara, CA - Fourth ranked Santa Clara mounted a rally after being down 6-10 in a WWLL Championship Tournament semifinal with UCSB and won 13-12. The Broncos tied it at 10-10 with about 16 minutes remaining and took an 11-10 lead with 14:21 to go in the game. Seventh ranked UCSB responded to tie it 11-11 on an assisted goal with a pass from senior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) to sophomore Lindsay Remigio (Syosset, NY). Senior Gracie Binder (Seattle, WA) of Santa Clara netted her 6th goal of the game to put Santa Clara up by 1 and then put in a 7th goal to give the Broncos a 12-10 advantage. Remigio found the net again for the Gauchos to get it to within one at 12-11 with 1:49 remaining. A few UCSB opportunities on offense in the closing moments were saved by Santa Clara senior goal keeper Renee Eligio (South San Francisco, CA).

It was a game of runs. After falling behind 0-2 UCSB went on a 5 goal run to take a 5-2 lead. Santa Clara scored 4 fo the next 5 goals and the score was 6-6 at halftime. UCSB had the ball and took the last shot of the first half but Eligio stopped the Gauchos on her doorstep with a point blank save. The Gauchos went on a 4 goal run to start the second half and took their 10-6 lead. It was 4 draw controls and 4 goals for UCSB. That's when the Broncos mounted their comeback by scoring 5 unanswered goals to take a 1 goal lead with about a quarter of a game left. That proved to be the final margin with both teams getting two apiece over the last 14 minutes.

Sophomore Lindsay Remigio (Syosset, NY) led UCSB in scoring with 3 goals and 3 assists. Senior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) had 4 goals and 1 assist. Junior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 16 saves. The Gauchos were again without junior Meagan Cruse (San Diego, CA) who is recovering from a strained quadricep. Cruse is the third leading scorer for UCSB. The Gauchos got a monster game from junior Shawna Falk (San Diego, CA) in the midfield. Falk has 5 ground balls, 3 draw controls and 3 caused turnovers offset by 0 fouls.

The Gauchos drop to 12-7 overall while Santa Clara improves to 11-2. UCSB plays Cal Poly SLO in the WWLL third place game at 12 Noon on Sunday in UCSB Harder Stadium. The Mustangs also dropped a 13-12 semifinal in their matchup with top ranked UC Davis. The championship game is at 2:00pm and features top ranked UC Davis and 4th ranked Santa Clara.
