UCSB B-Side Gets #1 Seed for Championship
Apr. 5, 2011 Santa Barbara, CA - The UCSB 'B' Team has the #1 seed in the Western Women's Lacrosse League 'B' Division Championship Tournament taking place at UCSB April 9th - 10th. The championship tournament will be played on the Rob Field turf both days. The Gauchos open up with a 2:00pm Saturday semifinal match-up and play the winner of the 10:00am USC 'B' vs. UCLA 'B' quarterfinal. It's a six team event and the #1 and #2 seeds receive a BYE through the quarterfinals. The B Side from Cal Poly SLO has the #2 seed and faces the winner of the UC Davis 'B' and UCSD 'B' quarterfinal on the other side of the bracket.
The UCSB 'B' Side is 8-0 against other 'B' teams and also has a success on the road against the only team from San Jose State for an overall record of 9-0. The Gauchos play their last regular season game this Thursday at 12:30pm with a game against SBCC at UCSB on Rob Field. Then they're on to the championship event on Saturday.
Sophomore Sarah Eadie (Davis, CA) leads the Gauchos in scoring with 39 goals and 11 assists for a total of 50 points in 9 games. Five other players have 10 or more points, giving the team a prolific offense. Rookie goalie Sophie McCarthy (Campolindo, CA) anchors a strong defense and is saving 54.9% of the shots she's faced. Sophomore Kerri Kowsky (Tustin, CA) and Eadie are tied for high ground ball honors with 24 apiece. Junior Megan Fisher (Woodside, CA) leads the team in take-aways having caused opponents to turn the ball over 16 times this season and has also scooped up 23 ground balls.
More than the individual stats showing the team has good players, though, the entire group plays well together and pulls hard for each other. The team is anything but quiet when they step up and take care of their opposition. The boisterous group can be heard loud and clear during games, cheering for their teammates all over the field, their desire for success obvious to everyone present.
