7th Ranked Colorado State Upsets UCSBBox Score
Apr. 2, 2011 Fort Collins, CO - A second half rally by 7th ranked Colorado State earned them an upset over 6th ranked UCSB in the second game of the Rocky Mountain Shootout for both teams. The Gauchos started fast and led 6-3 at halftime on the home field of CSU but could only muster one goal in the second half while the Rams scored 5 goals to win 8-7. It was the opposite scenario of the day before when UCSB trailed 8th ranked BYU by 2 goals at halftime. The Gauchos then won by 2 goals, outscoring the Cougars by 4 goals in the second half, to win 12-10.
UCSB had several opportunities to tie it up in the final moments but were stopped by the Colorado State defense and goal keeper each time. The Gauchos were able to take the ball away from a stalling CSU offense toward the end and scored the goal that got them to within one. UCSB created two more opportunities in the final two minutes, including an 8 meter free position shot with 17 seconds remaining, but were unable to score.
Junior goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had a great game. Centner had 12 saves while allowing only 8 goals for 60%. Defensively, UCSB had one of it's best games of the season, holding the Rams to the single digit output, but needed just a little bit more from their offense. The Gauchos played a great first half but didn't follow up with another one and that's what hurt them. UCSB dropped to 9-5 overall while CSU improved to 9-5. The Gauchos next game in the Rocky Mountain Shootout is with 15th ranked Virginia Tech. The Hokies upset CSU on March 25th in an 11-10 win at the A-Town Throwdown in Atlanta so it looks to be another tough matchup for UCSB..
