UCSB File PhotoFort Collins, CO - Sixth ranked UCSB opened up play in the Rocky Mountain Shootout at Colorado State University with a 12-10 win over Brigham Young. It took a second half rally to overcome a 2 goal halftime deficit but the Gauchos outscored the 8th ranked Cougars 7-3 in the second half and 9-3 overall, including a 2 goal UCSB run that capped off the first half, to take the game.

The Gauchos scored the first 2 goals of the game but BYU scored 7 of the next 8 goals in runs of 3 and 4. The Cougars were up 7-3 with 10 minutes remaining in the first half. UCSB looked a little sluggish and BYU was taking full advantage. The Gauchos were reacting on defense instead of dictating and the Cougars just had too much room. Following a time out UCSB started closing out to the player with the ball and getting their sticks into the passing lanes causing some turnovers. The Gauchos scored the last 2 goals of the second half to pull within 2 at 7-5 and had the ball to take two more shots in the last minute before intermission. The momentum had shifted the way of UCSB.

In the second half the Gaucho defense really clamped down at both ends of the field. UCSB scored 3 goals off a tough ride with an attacker jumping the goalie and everyone else working like crazy to make everyone look covered. Four times in the second half the UCSB attack took the ball away from the BYU defense trying to clear it and the Gauchos scored goals 3 of the 4 times.

"Our defense starting to play together and our ride are what made the difference in this game," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey.

"Those two things along with everyone staying positive and working hard throughout despite it looking like it was over before it was over carried us back into it."

UCSB improved to 9-4 overall while BYU dropped to 5-4. The Gauchos next play host Colorado State in their second game of the Rocky Mountain Shootout. The game with the 7th ranked Rams is at 11:00am Mountain Time.  UCSB plays two on Saturday with their second game at 3:00pm against 15th ranked Virginia Tech.
