St. John Fisher Starts Strong and Tops UCSBFeb. 28, 2011 Santa Barbara, CA - St. John Fisher College scored 7 of the first 9 goals on their way to a comfortable 10-5 halftime lead in an exhibition game at UCSB. The NCAA DIII Cardinals used quick short passing to cutters after dodging into the scoring area for open looks at the goal. It was an effective offense for the team from Rochester, New York here on a spring break trip. The score was 7-2 in favor of St. John Fisher midway through the first half before the Gauchos were able to rally. UCSB and the visitors played a 9-9 game the rest of the way but the Gauchos couldn't catch up. UCSB got it to within 3 goals at 14-11 with about 13 minute remaining by outscoring St. John Fisher 5-4 for the first 17 minutes of the second half. Timely draw controls by the Cardinals and continued scoring on their part against UCSB's extended defense resulted in the 16-11 final score. UCSB senior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) led all scorers with 6 goals and 1 assist. St. John Fisher freshman attacker Taylor Hughes (Watertown, NY) led the Cardinals with 5 goals. The Gauchos won the draw controls 16-13 but St. John Fisher outshot UCSB 31-24. Junior goalie Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 7 saves for UCSB in 60 minutes while sophomore Molly Naylon (Rochester, NY) and freshman Caroline Trpcevski (Manlius, NY) combined for 12 saves for the Cardinals playing 30 minutes each. "That was the quickest team we've played so far this season and if one of them got a step on a defender their teammates fed the ball without hesitation," commented UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after the game. "It took us a while to adjust on defense but it was exactly the kind of opponent we needed before we head up to Northern California for some great league games this weekend." The Gauchos worked everyone suited up into the game considering that it was an exhibition game and the Cardinals did the same. St. John Fisher opens their regular season at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Wednesday. UCSB travels to UC Davis and Santa Clara for key league and national ranking match-ups. The Aggies are ranked 3rd nationally in the most recent WCLA Top 20 Poll and the Broncos are ranked 4th. The Gauchos are ranked 6th. "There is no pressure on us in these upcoming games for the first time in a while," said Ramsey about the games at UC Davis and Santa Clara. Indeed, it is the first time any of the current UCSB players are the underdog in a game with these two teams and in a position to be the spoiler.
