UCSB Outswims Michigan in a Wet Lacrosse GameFeb. 18, 2011 Santa Barbara, CA - The Gauchos opened play in the 23rd Annual Santa Shootout with a 13-8 win over University of Michigan. The game was played in a downpour on the Rob Field Turf at UCSB. The Gauchos led 8-5 at halftime and then outscored the Wolverines 5-3 in the second half, including the last 3 of 4 goals scored in the game, to get the win. UCSB trailed 4-5 with 8 minutes remaining in the first half but then scored the next 6 goals to take a 10-5 lead. Four of the goals in that run were scored in the last 7 minutes of the first half and 2 goals were scored in the first 5 minutes of the second half making it a 6 goal run over a 12 minute span. Michigan scored 2 in a row to pull within 3 goals but then the Gauchos closed it out outscoring the Wolverines 3-1 over the final 10 minutes. Senior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) led all scorers with 4 goals. Sophomores Lauren Cary (Coronado, CA) and Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA ) had 4 ground balls each. Cary had 4 caused turnovers and Norlin had 3. Sophomore Katie Mitchell (Lafayette, CA) had 4 draw controls. Junior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) saved 7 shots against her. UCSB improved to 4-0 and faces Pittsburgh in the second game of the day. The Panthers lost 8-5 to Brigham Young in their first game today.
