UCSB File PhotoLos Angeles, CA - UCSB broke open an early 1-1 tie and outscored UCLA 11-5 the rest of the first half to run away with the WWLL Central Division opener for both teams. Playing at UCLA, and eventually playing short handed for the last 22:57 of the game, the Gauchos were little affected by anything thrown at them. When a third yellow card was given to a UCSB attacker, for a dangerous follow through on a shot on goal, there were almost 23 minutes of game time left and the score was 13-7 in favor of UCSB. The third yellow card meant UCSB could no longer have 12 players on the field. It is a non-releasable penalty that extends for the remainder of the game.

The door seemed open for UCLA to get back in it with a player up advantage for the rest of the game and a lot of time on the clock. UCSB shut the door on UCLA, though, and outscored them 8-3 the rest of the way despite only 6 Gauchos on offense to 7 Bruins on defense. UCSB could have sent one more player over the restraining line to be even on offense. Instead the Gauchos chose to stay matched up in their own defensive end and go at it one player short on the attack. UCLA double teamed the ball when they could get close to it but the UCSB movement with and without the ball mostly kept it away from the double. Playing 11 against 12 for more than 20 minutes didn't matter in the end.

"Twenty minutes would have been a long time to try to stall out the game against a good team like UCLA," said 4th year head coach Paul Ramsey after the game," so we went the other route and kept playing lacrosse."

"We only looked at the cage after moving it around to stay ahead of the extra defender and then we got open inside for a great look at goal and finished our opportunities."

Senior Ashley Antoon-Algieri (San Ramon, CA) notched 10 points on 7 goals and 3 assists to lead all scorers and have a career high game. She scored 3 goals in the first half and 3 of her 4 second half goals came while the Gauchos were playing short. Ten UCSB players scored a point and 13 of the 19 UCSB goals from the field were assisted. The Gauchos also scored 2 goals on free position shots. Junior Maegan Cruse (San Diego, CA) was second leading scorer overall with 4 goals and 1 assist. UCLA junior Morgan Oberstein (San Diego, CA) led the Bruins with 4 goals.

Junior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) saved 14 while allowing only 10 goals for 58.3%. Centner's consistent clearing was a boon for the Gauchos on offense. It started the up tempo UCSB attack with good mid to long range clears that gave UCSB only 60 to 70 yards of transition to get down on offense. Freshman midfielder Abby Eastwood (Rumson, NJ) was a sniper on defense forcing 3 UCLA turnovers, getting 3 ground balls and 2 draw controls. Eastwood contributed 3 assists for good measure. Sophomore Katie Mitchell (Lafyatte, CA) led UCSB with 4 draw controls and also had 4 points on 3 goals and 1 assist.

UCSB improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the WWLL. UCLA dropped to 1-1, 0-1. The Gauchos next face Michigan in a 4:30pm game on Friday that is part of the 23rd Annual Santa Barbara Shootout.
