UCSB File PhotoSan Diego, CA - The Gauchos played their first road game of the season and won 19-6 at University of San Diego. UCSB raced out to a 13-1 lead against the Toreros. Eight different Gauchos scored goals on the way to the 12 goal halftime lead. UCSB forced San Diego into 18 turnovers in the first half with an agressive ride and after a 1-1 tie early scored 12 unanswered goals. The high number of Gauchos getting in on the action was a result of every UCSB player again getting in the game in the first 15 minutes of play.  Four goals came from players getting in off the bench.

"We've been subbing everyone in early and then staying with a keep everyone fresh strategy," said fourth year UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey.

"Of course, the threats we have coming off the bench are great but more importantly we keep our flow and continuity going even though six players are running in and out on attack, midfield and defense."

The Toreros scored the first goal of the second half and, while UCSB scored two of their own, San Diego later went on a 3 goal run over about 13 minutes of play. The Gauchos went without a goal of their own for nearly 15 minutes. Coming off averaging a goal almost every two minutes it seemed a little like UCSB had stopped playing. After a timeout to take a mental reset UCSB answered with their own 3 goal run to end the game. There was time for 3 more goals, for sure, and if USD had gotten them the final score would have been 16-9. The result would have appeared much different if the Toreros had won the second half 8-3.

"The other way to go on the last few minutes of action was stall it out and finish with the ball," said Ramsey, "but we need a different momentum out of ourselves heading up the road to play UCLA."

UCSB junior Maegan Cruse (San Diego, CA) led all scorers with 4 goals and 2 assists. Cruse also snaked 7 ground balls, often from right at the feet of San Diego players, and forced 3 turnovers. Sophomore Emilia Norlin (Mill Valley, CA) led the defense with 4 ground balls and 3 caused turnovers. Junior Jeni Centner (Tustin, CA) had 8 saves while only allowing 6 goals for 57.1%. UCSB outshot San Diego 29-17.

UCSB improved to 2-0 and next plays at UCLA on Sunday at 1:00pm. It is the WWLL Central Division opener for both teams. USD dropped to 0-1.
