Hawaii Tournament ActionWaikiki, HI - UCSB broke open a 3-3 game with a 4-2 second half to take third place in the Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational. The Gauchos beat West Coast Force 7-5 with some gritty play in the last half that earned them the win. UCSB bounced back after the 10-9 overtime setback against Eleu. A a win in that game would have put the Gauchos in the championship game. Team Breakaway beat Eleu 9-8 in the final game after a tied 5-5 halftime.

UCSB was one of four teams in the hunt for the championship after the first two rounds of pool play. The other three teams were comprised mostly of post-collegiate players with a smattering of them from NCAA Division One programs and Eleu boasted a U.S.  National Team player. Regardless, the Gauchos went into the tournament feeling like they were playing for first all the way and it was only a slow start against Eleu that put UCSB in the third place game instead of the championship.

Midfield play and the UCSB attack riding hard on West Coast Force clears is what broke the game open for the Gauchos. The attack take-aways from Force defenders didn't always result in a fastbreak goal but it did keep giving UCSB the ball back.

"We've been good at re-defending for the last three years," commented UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after some time to reflect on the weekend.

"It's the hard work like that that has won some close games for us more than once."

The Gauchos are next in action on November 7th when they host the UCSB 3 v. 3 Tournament. The Fall Ball season ends with the annual alumni game on November 13th.
