Hawaii Tournament ActionWaikiki, HI - UCSB women's lacrosse played the Hawaii top team, Eleu, in their third pool play game of the Hawaii Lacrosse Invitational and lost 10-9 in overtime. The game was a semifinal of sorts with only the pool play winners advancing to the final and both teams 2-0 heading into the game. It took a second half rally by UCSB to get themselves back into the game after a slow start at both ends of the field.

The Gauchos defense was a step behind Eleu most of the first half and the Eleu players were winning most of the draw controls and the ground balls. UCSB found themselves down 6-3 at halftime. The Gauchos scored the first goal of the second half and  with some great defense and ground ball work kept chipping away to eventually take a 9-8 lead with a few minutes to play. Eleu then won the draw and fastbreaked to make it 9-9 with just under two minutes remaining. Eleu won the next draw too but a tight defense and a save got UCSB the ball with a minute and a half left to work for the last shot and the win. Unfortunately UCSB was unable to keep the ball and take a shot but the Gauchos had taken enough time off the clock so that the turnover didn't result in an Eleu score.

The Gauchos had outscored Eleu 5-2 in the second half to make a game of it and get the overtime opportunity. The island had other plans, though, and at the start of overtime Hawaiin center Kristen Kjellman (Northwestern '07 and USA Elite Team) won the draw, took it to goal herself and won the game with a dodge, pull out and then re-dodge move that resulted in the UCSB slide not coming in time and a quick goal to give Eleu the win.

"It took a lot of effort and focused play for us to come back against a good team like that," said UCSB head coach Paul Ramsey after the game.

Eleu was stacked for the tournament with players like Kjellman, former James Madison All-American and current USA Elite Team member Kelly Berger and former Denver University player Sarah Medwell.

"So that was good for us to do that for half a game but a better start and we can say we beat a stacked team," continued Ramsey.  "That's what I'm interested in more."

The Gauchos face Ramsey's other Hawaii Tournament team West Coast Force in the 3rd place game at 12:30pm. The Force, made up mostly of post-collegiate players, were also second in their pool.
